Geelong born Thom Johnston is one of the mainstays in Melbourne’s new folk and alt-country scene. With the success of his debut single ‘Shiver’, Johnston’s talents have resulted in recognition from Beat Magazine, Triple J, PBS, Music Victoria, John Schumann (of Redgum), Tones of Naarm and shortlisting in the American Songwriters’ Lyric Contest.

With the character of your Australia pub wallpaper, and the influence of the songwriters of the past, his music sounds as if Bob Dylan and Don McLean had raised a child in Geelong. Thom’s skill for “making the ordinary worth documenting” (Beat magazine), has garnered a diverse audience of people who are figuring themselves out here, and around the world.

Following last year’s debut single, Thom and his band sold out both headliners at Bar Open (110 cap.) and the Brunswick Green within a month of each other. More recently, Thom has packed out Mamma Chen’s earlier this year, then headlined an iconic front bar set at the Tote.

With this building momentum, Thom plans to release ‘By the Bedside’, an album of acoustic songs alongside local and international collaborators, on the 20th of November this year, with a special physical & bandcamp only release.

Following this will be an EP (yet to be announced), where he will be working with acclaimed producer Mitchell Watson (Studio August), which will release early to mid 2027.
